Rain overnight, slippery in places so take care please.
Designed by Jack Niklaus II, the golf course winds through ancient parkland, blending beautiful contours with trees and water to present an enticing challenge to golfers of all abilities. The front nine is relatively open but you need to hone your accuracy by the back nine, which is more wooded and hilly. There are three main lakes on the course, which come into play on several holes, and well-placed bunkers to catch you if you shy too far away from the water.
The 1st throws you straight into the fray with a tricky piece of course management. A 396 yard par 4, the hole dog-legs left, with an oak tree guarding the left-hand side of the fairway and a bunker on the right. Big hitters can carry the tree but if you fall short, make sure you’re not blocked out. The two-tier, elevated green has a big run-off at the back, so don’t overcook your approach. Take a look back down the fairway for a fabulous view of the clubhouse.
The 15th is our signature hole, a picturesque par 3 requiring a brave tee shot. At 157 yards off the back tees, the green is reachable but it’s relatively small and mostly surrounded by water. There is dry land to the right but the chip back is far from easy. You really need to hit the green in one but beware of the slope – you wouldn’t want to get all that way, only to see your ball roll back into the lake.
The 17th is the last of the par 5s and can sabotage your round if you’re not accurate. Measuring 502 yards, it will tempt big hitters to go for the green in two but your second is a pressure shot over a lake to an elevated green, with bunkers either side. Start with a good, straight drive, avoiding the fairway bunkers on either side and the ditch down the right. Then you have the choice to lay up or go for it.
“Great course, challenging at times but well kept & the perfect place to go to play a round, my favourite club” – D.E
